When Is Tooth Extraction Necessary?
To look for signs of irreparable damage or decay, your dentist will conduct a thorough evaluation that may include taking X-rays.
Your tooth may be considered for extraction if you are experiencing one of the following conditions.
- Extensive tooth damage: Sometimes, a tooth has been decayed and fractured so severely that it cannot be repaired.
- Loose or non-functioning tooth: In some cases, it may be necessary to pull a tooth due to extensive loosening caused by advanced gum disease, for example. Periodontal bacteria eat away at the bone and gum supporting the tooth.
- Orthodontic treatment: Some orthodontic treatments, such as braces, require dental extractions to make room for more precise teeth alignment.
- Extra Teeth: You may have extra teeth that stop other teeth from erupting. These teeth are also referred to as supernumerary teeth.
An extraction may require tooth replacement, in which case the patient needs to choose an option that fits their needs.
Tooth Extraction Is Relatively Painless
While it’s ideal for natural teeth to be maintained, restored, or repaired before they get to the point of no return, having a tooth pulled doesn’t have to be an unpleasant experience.
We’ll walk you through every step and make sure you feel safe and comfortable throughout the process.
The Extraction Process
When extraction is the best course of action, our dental team will begin by numbing the site with local anesthesia. For those with sensitivities, anti-anxiety medications or sedation may be administered. There are two types of dental extractions:
- Simple extractions are performed on teeth visible above the gum line. A dental elevator is usually used to lift the tooth from its socket and remove it.
- Surgical extractions are more complex; they’re performed on impacted teeth that are not visible above the gum line. In this case, making an incision through the gum line tissue is necessary to remove the tooth.
It’s typical for the dentist to provide aftercare instructions following an extraction to help manage pain and speed up the healing process, which may include temporary diet changes, medications, or avoiding certain activities for a period of time.
Tooth Extraction Aftercare
Be sure to follow all instructions given by your dental team. In conjunction with your postoperative instructions, the following suggestions will help to lower your risk of tooth extraction-related infection, ensuring that your mouth heals properly.
Beginning the day after the procedure:
- Keep the teeth around the healing tooth socket clean by gently brushing.
- After meals, gently rinse your mouth with warm salt water to prevent food particles from getting into the extraction site. It’s crucial not to rinse your mouth too hard, as this could loosen the blood clot.
- During this early stage of healing, do not use mouthwash until your dentist gives you the go-ahead.
