What Are Dental Implants?

Dental implants are a natural-looking and durable replacement for missing teeth. A dental implant is made up of three parts: a titanium implant post, an abutment, and a restoration.

  • The titanium implant post is implanted into the jawbone and serves as an artificial root, providing a strong foundation to support your dental restoration.
  • The abutment is a piece that connects the implant post to the restoration.
  • The restoration, or prosthetic tooth, is custom created to match your existing teeth in both shape and color and is secured to the abutment.

You typically have a choice of materials when selecting your restoration. We often suggest dental crowns that are best suited for longevity, such as porcelain-fused-to-metal (PFM). High-quality materials can help your implants last for decades rather than years.

What Can I Expect During the Dental Implants Procedure?

Sometimes, patients are not healthy enough to get implants right away. We can offer periodontal therapy such as bone grafting to bolster the density of your bone tissue, making it more accepting of your new teeth. Once you’re healthy, the dental implant procedure typically involves the following steps:

  • Administration of anesthetics to ensure patient comfort throughout the procedure
  • Preparation of the jaw for implant placement by making small incisions and drilling into the jawbone
  • Placement of the dental implant post into the jawbone
  • Attachment of an abutment to the implant post, which sometimes involves making a second incision into the gums after the initial healing period
  • Fitting of the dental crown onto the abutment
  • Final adjustment of the implant and crown to ensure a proper fit and a natural look

This process often takes several visits over a period of 3 to 6 months. When the implant post is placed, the bone will begin to fuse around it, strengthening its hold in the jaw. This is the ideal outcome. We like to wait until the implant is stabilized through osseointegration before continuing with the abutment and crown.
